Dude...

Kenneth came over yesterday, and much to Thomas' excitement, he brought his skateboard.  Thomas absolutely adores his big brother.  He was more than a little thrilled that Kenneth offered to teach him and his friend Kaiser some skateboarding moves.  It makes my mom heart happy to see them hanging out together.

Let the soccer season begin... again!

Thomas loves soccer more than just about anything, so it's nice that our little town league has both fall and spring sessions. Thomas is playing with the second and third graders again, this time on the black team. They decided to go for a pirate look.  Thomas scored four goals, but the Pirates went down 5-4.

Friends in real life

The littles with Bobby dog and new friend Dimples.

One thing that I love about blogging and the internet is getting to know people from all over... even if you've never actually met in "real life". But something I love even more is when I get to meet one of my cyber acquaintances in person. This past week, we hosted a lovely family as they traveled to Nebraska to pursue EMDR therapy for one of the daughters in the family. EMDR therapy is one of the therapies that Candace and Sarah have had through the Attachment and Trauma Center of Nebraska, where they meet with Cathy the Wonder Therapist.  Lisa, Russ and daughter K. (known online as "Dimples") came all the way from Idaho for a week of intensive work with the staff at ATCN.  You can read more about that on Lisa's excellent and informative blog One Thankful Mom.  Lisa has been generously sharing her knowledge on parenting children from hard places for several years now... I know we are just one family that has benefitted from her wisdom and openness.

So... may I admit that finally getting to meet her was for me very much the way some people must feel when they meet a Hollywood celebrity?  Yeah, I was that excited.  And all three of our guests were lovely people; a pleasure to have in our home.  Also, the littles loved Dimples, and I believe the feeling was mutual.  They had a great dynamic during the entire visit.

I think I can safely say that we are now "friends in real life".  I hope to be able to visit Idaho some day and will be delighted if Dimples and family make it out our way again.

Fishing

Tom really loves to fish. Me... eh, not so much. Living on a lake has given Tom lots of opportunity to enjoy this past time, and he likes to share it with the kids. The bigs were teenagers and pretty busy with their own activities by the time we moved out here, but the littles are just ripe for the picking. Last summer, Thomas was a little nervous about pulling slimy finned creatures out of the lake for fun and relaxation, but this year he has become quite the little fisherman. He loves when he and daddy are the only ones home and they go down to the lake to fish together.

Casting from the dock and waiting patiently.

He moved down the shore a little ways and reeled one in.

Thomas can even remove the fish from the line and throw it back by himself.  Pretty good for a kindergartner!

Pictures I love

My daddy with Emily when she was just a chubby cheeked toddler.  Dad used to call her "Rat Baby".  Don't ask why.  :)

Sleeping beauties

Sarah and Candace have a queen size bed that they share. Earlier this week, while Tom was out of town, they slept with me in our king sized bed... but they still ended up like this:

Like puppies in a basket

They sleep like this pretty much every night.  When they had twin beds, one would crawl in with the other so they could snuggle up together.  This is how they like to sleep when snuggling with the parental units at night, too.  Which isn't particularly restful, but it sure is sweet.  :)

In a land far, far away...

The littles have recemtly discovered a new favorite play spot. At the top of a hill, our neighborhood has a tennis court. There are trees all around and a pretty little gazebo. Because most of our neighbors are a) seasonal and b) without young children, the place is usually deserted. It's not far away; maybe two suburban blocks, but I have only recently let the kids mosey down there on their own. This is because I can't see it from our windows, so I can't tell what they might be doing... but I finally trust the twins enough to follow some basic rules (rule number one: don't go anywhere else without telling us) so that they can go together. Thomas can go with them, but he is definitely not trustworthy on his own yet.

Downside for me: I have to go get them when I want them to come home, because they can't see or her me from there. So this evening, I took my camera when I went to call them home. I was a little surprised and quite pleased at all the fun they were having in their special spot.

The first thing I found them doing was playing tennis, Candace and Sarah vs. Thomas.  They look much more skilled in these photos than they are in real life.  :)

Candace gives the ball a whack.

They had a picnic snack at this gazebo, which they call their playhouse.

They showed me how high they could climb this old cottonwood tree.

To the littles, it's a world away, but if you walk through the trees at the top of the hill, you can still see home, sweet home.

Groovy

I put my 1970's Girl Scout skills to use and taught the littles how to make "cool" macrame bracelets.  They are using cheap blue yarn; not an ideal textile, but you have to work with the materials on hand.

A skill from another era!

Well, this blast from the past made me smile, anyway!

Magic carpet ride

Nothing warms my heart more than seeing my kids participate in some good old-fashioned imaginative play.  They were having a great time this week on their "magic carpet".

The take-off!

Oh, no!  It's a crash landing!

Labor Day family party... in pictures

Sunday we hosted our annual beach party for my extended family... mostly cousins from my side of the family.  My mom came in from Indianapolis this year to join in the fun and family fellowship.

Our new pergola... guaranteed to withstand a category 2 hurricane!  My mom and several cousins are enjoying our new shady spot.
